Girls gone mild: relaxed, low-key hens party ideas

A girls gone mild hens is a relaxed, low-key hens party built around her favourite people, good food and one or two beautiful experiences instead of a big messy night, and My Ultimate Hens plans hens parties in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, the Gold Coast, Perth and Adelaide.

Brides aren’t asking for bigger nights anymore. They’re asking for better ones.

The short answer

What is a girls gone mild hens?

A girls gone mild hens is a relaxed, low-key hens: her favourite people, good food, one or two beautiful things to do, and nobody doing anything she’ll want deleted from the group chat. It’s the hens for the bride who’d rather have a long lunch than a long queue.

The name started as an American trend, and it’s landed here because brides have stopped wanting the L-plates, the penis straws and the third nightclub queue of the night. What they want instead is the day everyone’s still talking about at the wedding.

Mild doesn’t mean early bed.

It means better, not bigger. A long lunch that rolls into the afternoon. A spa morning in the good robe. A creative class with a glass beside the clay. Dinner by the water at one long table, and the photo of her laughing at golden hour.

Pinterest has named low-key pre-wedding celebrations as a trend to watch, and you can see why: fewer brides want a night built around drinking, and more want a day built around them.

For every other kind of hens, our hens party ideas have the lot.

Before you plan a thing

Is a low-key hens right for your bride?

Start with the bride conversation. Sit her down with a wine (or a tea) and ask her three things: her dream version of the day, her non-negotiables and her no-list. The no-list is gold. Once you know what she’d hate, everything else gets easy.

It’s probably a mild one if…

  • She’s said “nothing tacky” more than once.
  • She’s an introvert, or she’s just over the big nights.
  • She’s pregnant, or a few of the girls don’t drink.
  • Mum and the aunties are coming.
  • Half the group has never met.
  • She’d rather talk to everyone than shout over a DJ.

Low-key doesn’t mean low-effort. It means picking the day that fits her, instead of asking her to fit the day.

If she’s expecting, our pregnant bride hens party ideas go deeper, and for a group that runs from her cousins to her nan, see our all-ages hens party ideas.

Her no-list

  1. L-plates and anything inflatable
  2. Being put on the spot
  3. A nightclub queue at midnight
  4. A hangover on Sunday
  5. Her favourite people
  6. A long table and good food
  7. One beautiful thing to do
  8. Time to actually talk

The mild menu

Relaxed hens party ideas she’ll actually love

Twenty-one ways to keep it mild. One makes a gorgeous day, two or three make a weekend, and every one of them leaves room for the best part: everyone actually talking to each other.

  • Four women in white robes clinking glasses of champagne, laughing together

A spa morning in the good robe

    All ages

Massages or facials, a lounge full of fluffy robes, and the herbal tea pushed politely aside the second someone spots the bubbles. She walks out glowing, and nobody has raised their voice once.

  • The pampering comes to you

    Comes to youAll ages

Therapists set up right where you’re staying: hands, feet, shoulders and a little glam, with everyone in the one room, still in their PJs, still chatting.

  • A group of friends in white robes squeezed together and smiling inside a round timber sauna with a big round window

A soak at a bathhouse or hot springs

    Slow

Warm pools, steam, a cold plunge for whoever’s brave enough, and absolutely nowhere to be. Do it in the morning and the whole day runs slower and sweeter.

  • High tea, the posh kind

    All ages

Tiered stands, ribbon sandwiches, scones with far too much cream and a sneaky glass of bubbles. Give it ten minutes and the voice in your head develops a posh English accent. Her nan will adore it, and so will her cousins.

  • A big hens group gathered behind a long lunch table of plates, glasses and bottles, the bride in a pink sash in the middle

Brunch or a long lunch that takes the whole afternoon

    All ages

One long table, share plates landing faster than anyone can photograph them, and nowhere to rush to after. The long lunch is the backbone of a mild hens.

  • Dinner by the water at one long table

Golden hour, the water going pink, every guest at the same table instead of split down three. That’s where the photo of her laughing comes from.

Make a weekend of it

A girls gone mild hens weekend, Friday to Sunday

Two nights, one place, no alarms. Here’s how a mild weekend runs, scene by scene.

  1. Friday: arrive slow

The girls roll in to our accommodation, robes go on, someone pops the first bottle, and dinner is one long table that goes later than anyone planned.

  2. Saturday: the main event

A creative class or a winery day, back for a little glam, then dinner by the water. Everyone’s staying in the one place, so the night never splits up hunting for taxis home.

  3. Sunday: brunch and a reset

A slow brunch, a spa morning, and one last group hug in the driveway before everyone heads home glowing.

See our hens weekend packages.

The look

The girls gone mild look: what to wear and what to bring

Soft, pretty and easy to move in. Linen and florals by day, something a little dressier for dinner, and the bride in white or cream so she stands out in every photo without trying. Comfy shoes on winery day, obviously.

Pick one colour story for the group and the photos take care of themselves:

Sage and cream
Blush and gold
White and sky

What to bring

  • Robes or matching PJs for the night in.
  • Eye masks and little gift bags for the girls.
  • A “girls gone mild” banner or sign for the photo wall, if she loves a theme.
  • Sunnies, sunscreen and a hat for anything outdoors.

More on what to wear on a hens night.

Gentle games, big laughs

Low-key hens games nobody cringes at

Nobody on a chair, nobody on the spot, and everybody laughing. These five work at a long table, on a winery lawn or in PJs.

  • How well do you know the bride?

Ten questions, a pen each, and the winner picks the next song.

  • What did the groom say?

Ask him the questions beforehand, read his answers out, and watch her face.

  • The photo scavenger hunt

A list of shots to tick off around the winery or the accommodation. Best group photo wins.

  • Hens bingo

Squares for the things that always happen: Mum tears up, someone says “just one more”, the bride says “I love you guys”.

  • The memory toast

Everyone shares one favourite memory of her. Have the tissues ready.

Nobody left out

Mild for everyone at the table

The best thing about a mild hens is that nobody sits on the edge of it. The mocktails at the cocktail class look as good as the real thing. High tea is high tea, with or without the bubbles. The spa, the workshops and the long lunch are every bit as fun without a glass, and a pregnant bride gets every single toast.

There’s more on hens party ideas without alcohol and pregnant bride hens party ideas, and Jennifer’s review below says it better than we can.

  • Mum, nan and the cousins
  • Non-drinkers
  • A pregnant bride
  • The quiet ones
  • Girls who’ve never met

A wink, not a woo

Mild still has mischief

Heat level: Medium

Mild doesn’t mean nothing cheeky. It means the cheek is better placed.

Our topless waiter pouring the bubbles halfway through the long lunch changes the mood of the whole table in about four seconds. Our drag queen running bingo at brunch pulls everyone in without putting anyone on the spot. And for a bit more wink, there’s life drawing, where the giggles start well before the pencils do.

For the bride who wants it polished top to tail, our classy hens party ideas keep it glam the whole way through.

Girls Gone Wild had its era. Girls Gone Mild is better dressed, better planned and far more memorable.

I was a MOH for the first time and feeling the pressure because she is not into the tacky hens thing at all. What I liked most was that Britt actually understood the difference between 'things to do on a hens' and planning a good hens that felt like an actual celebration not a bunch of bookings together because obviously I could have booked a cocktail class and dinner or whatever myself obviously. I only realised after that I just wouldn't have known which combination would suit our group, what order to do it all in or half the little details and personalised touches for the bride that made the whole night what it was. So there's definitely more thought behind these packages than I realised before booking and she absolutely loved it and apparently I'm now the designated event organiser of the group. Would 100% use them again and a big thankyou to Britt and Maddi as well for everything that went into making it so good!

Honestly, I was nervous about the price point of going out as we couldn't decide if we should just have it at my house and nearly talked myself out of it twice. Josh who helped me find our package remembered I'd mentioned during my first chat that we weren't sure if a drinks package would be good value for us because not many of us are big drinkers, and he agreed with me and found a package at a lower price point so I really appreciated that and felt really looked after. He actually cared about us finding a package that suited us which I really appreciated. Really overjoyed with the outcome and so was Rachel the bride and her very fussy mum as well. Thank you to the whole team but especially to Josh.

Good morning Everyone, Happy Tuesday! I just wanted to touch base after my weekend away and say THANK YOU! Myself and all my Girls had an absolutely amazing time with many laughs and memories. Our accommodation was great and I cannot recommend enough your venue on Darling Harbour - I will certainly be going back there, the food was lovely, the cocktails strong and the music was fantastic - Loved it!

The ladies who came to our room for the pamper experience were beautiful, so professional and provided an incredible service, everyone LOVED it and again I cannot recommend them enough. It was so great that everyone was able to be in the room together, chat and have a few drinks during this time - I would highly recommend other groups consider having the in room experience over going to a day spa as it is so relaxed. Thank you again to everyone for all your help, taking the stress out of everything and arranging a fantastic weekend. Jaime :) x

All My Ultimate staff that I have spoken to or emailed has been fantastic. I feel I have been listened to, and bookings were made to Tayla's wishes. The paint and sip, this was great, a lot of fun and everyone enjoyed themselves, even the ones that "can't" paint. Highly recommend. Bus to high tea, driver Dave was great, professional and safe driver, recommended highly. Called and was on time. High tea, with Turkish twist, was great. Very friendly staff, food looked great and tasted yummy!

Quick answers

Girls gone mild hens questions

What is a girls gone mild hens?

A girls gone mild hens is a relaxed, low-key hens party: her favourite people, good food and one or two beautiful experiences, like a spa morning, a long lunch or a creative class, instead of a big messy night.

Is girls gone mild the same as a low-key or relaxed hens?

Yes. Girls gone mild is the trend name for a low-key, relaxed hens, and it still has room for a little mischief when she wants it.

Where did the girls gone mild trend come from?

It started as an American bachelorette trend, a play on “girls gone wild”, and it has landed in Australia because more brides want a hens that feels like them rather than a big night out.

What do you do at a girls gone mild hens?

A spa morning or a hens pamper party at your accommodation, high tea, a long lunch, a winery day, a creative class like pottery, perfume or flower crowns, then dinner at one long table or a night in.

Is a low-key hens still fun?

Yes. When the day fits her, the laughs come easily, and nobody spends the night shouting over a DJ or waiting in a nightclub queue.

Do low-key hens still include drinking?

Yes, if she wants it. A glass of bubbles at the spa or wine at a long lunch is part of the day, and anyone not drinking has just as much fun at high tea, a workshop or the alcohol-free cocktails.

What if the group is a mix of personalities?

Pick experiences everyone can join at their own pace, like a workshop, a long table or a winery day, so the quiet ones and the loud ones both have a good time.

Is a girls gone mild hens good for an introverted bride?

Yes. It’s built around her closest people and things to do together, so she’s celebrated without being put on the spot.

Can Mum and the aunties come?

Yes. High tea, a spa morning, a long lunch and the workshops work for every age at the table. More in our all-ages hens party ideas.

Is it good for a pregnant bride?

Yes. High tea, the workshops and a long lunch all suit a pregnant bride, and she gets every toast. More in our pregnant bride hens party ideas.

What do we wear to a girls gone mild hens?

Soft, pretty and comfortable: linen and florals by day, something a little dressier for dinner, and the bride in white or cream.

Can we do a girls gone mild hens weekend?

Yes. Stay together at our accommodation and fill the weekend with a creative class, a winery day, a long dinner and a slow Sunday brunch. See our hens weekend packages.

How much does a girls gone mild hens cost?

Most day and night packages sit between about $130 and $350 per person, and weekends away with accommodation between about $250 and $550. Every package shows its own price per person on its page. Here’s more on how much a hens party costs.

Which cities do you plan hens parties in?

Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, the Gold Coast, Perth and Adelaide: pick her city to see what’s on there.

Your moveYou get to be at her hens, not running it: right next to her at the long table when the toasts start and she looks around at everyone who came for her.
