Every so often somebody mentions something cheeky like a male revue for the hens, the whole group goes suspiciously quiet, and then everyone carries on like they weren't just extremely interested. It's been floated enough times to become a running joke, but Abs-olutely Hitched Weekend is no joke. With the Ultimate Hens Bachelorette Pad Apartment, rooftop bubbly, seats at a male revue and a VIP booth at our laneway cocktail lounge to finish, how could it be? Some ideas deserve to make it out of the group chat. Particularly the ones involving very few shirts.
The build-up starts at the Bach Pad. Bags hit the floor, the music goes on and every available power point is claimed. For now, the only thing being teased is everyone's hair, with backcombing brushes doing the rounds, heels being tried on and swapped back and a bottle opened to assist with important outfit decisions. Getting ready together with your girls is still the best warm-up act there is.
First, the sip. Head up to our rooftop bar, where your reserved area and a bottle of bubbly for the group are waiting. Pour the first glasses, toast the bride and enjoy the fact that after all that talk, you're actually doing it. The discounted cocktail menu is there should the occasion call for another round. We suspect it might.
Then, the tease. Take your seats at the male revue and enjoy a glass of bubbly each before the lights go down. Topless waiters bring finger food around, then the performers hit the stage with far more choreography than anyone was braced for. The shirts become increasingly unnecessary and suddenly the debrief has a lot of new material. The performers may even invite the bride up on stage, or she can cheer from her seat.
After the show, head to our laneway cocktail lounge, where your group skips the cover charge and your VIP booth is waiting with another bottle of bubbly chilling at the table. The whole show gets replayed over the first glass, with differing accounts of who enjoyed which part the most. Then the dancefloor wins, and the booth becomes home base between songs.
Later, heels come off at the Bach Pad door and everyone collapses onto the couch for the debrief, which mostly consists of favourite moments being discussed in unnecessary detail and stage routines acted out from a seated position. Nobody needs to say it, but somebody will: why did it take us this long?
We've planned enough hens weekends to know that half the fun is in the anticipation. The hair teased at the mirror, the first bottle popped on the rooftop, the moment the lights go down and the show that's still being reenacted back at the Bach Pad hours later. The group chat teased it for months. Turns out somebody just needed to call the bride's buff.
