What is a Last Rodeo hens party?

A Last Rodeo hens is a cowgirl-themed hens party: her last ride as a single woman before the wedding. The bride wears white, the girls wear one colour story with hats and boots, and the night runs on line dancing, country singalongs, margaritas and a few cheeky games. Pick her kind of cowgirl first, and everything else follows.

How to throw it, in five moves

  1. Pick her cowgirl. Pink rodeo, disco, coastal, diamonds and denim, or space. It decides the colours, the playlist and the drink.
  2. Send a dress code everyone can say yes to. One colour story, and every girl picks her own level: full rodeo, hat and boots, or just the hat.
  3. Put the hats to work early. A hat bar or a hat swap at pre-drinks has the quiet ones laughing before the first round.
  4. Learn one line dance together. Nothing turns a table of strangers into a group faster than everyone turning the wrong way at once.
  5. Save her song for when everyone’s in the room. That last chorus, with her in the middle, is the photo.

What to wear to a Last Rodeo hens party

The bride is the only one in white. Everyone else picks one colour story and her own level of rodeo. Hats and boots do most of the work, so nobody needs a whole new wardrobe to look like she planned it for weeks.

Order them a couple of weeks out so they arrive in time. Plain ones are best if you’re doing a hat bar.

BOOTS

New boots need a week of walking round the house first, and someone’s bag needs blister patches. A block heel dances better than a stiletto.

NAILS

Chrome pink, tiny white stars, one cow-print accent nail or rhinestone tips. Hands round a margarita always end up in the camera roll.

EVERY BODY

Fringe, flares, long denim skirts and jumpsuits all read cowgirl. The hat and boots make the theme, not the hemline.

You don’t need to build a saloon. Four things turn any room into her Last Rodeo, and the first one keeps everyone busy for the whole first hour.

  1. The hat bar

    Plain hats in a stack, a tray of patches, pins, rhinestones and ribbon, and a glue gun kept well away from the bubbly. Everyone decorates her own, nobody checks her phone for an hour, and every hat goes home as a keepsake.

  2. The photo wall

    A silver or pink tinsel curtain, a disco ball or two, and a sign with her rodeo name on it. Add a cowboy cut-out if the group is that way inclined.

    Hot pink, chrome silver and white, with a few cow-print balloons through the middle. Put the garland where the group photo happens, not where the food is.

  4. The table

What the room needs

The room makes or breaks a cowgirl hens. It needs space for a line of twelve to kick and turn, music you control, somewhere for the hats to live, and a little privacy for the cheekier games.

Cowgirl cocktails, by the glass or the jug

Five drinks, one for each kind of cowgirl, with the quantities worked out for your group. Every one has a zero-proof twin that looks the same in the glass, so whoever’s driving gets the same photo as everyone else.

  • Pink Rodeo

    The Pink Paloma

    Tequila, grapefruit and a salt rim. Pink without trying.

    • Blanco tequila 45 ml
    • Lime juice 15 ml
    • Pink grapefruit soda 90 ml

    Salt half the rim, fill with ice, build in the glass, stir once.

    ZERO-PROOFSkip the tequila and add another 30 ml of soda. Same salt, same glass.

  • Disco Cowgirl

    The Rhinestone Frosé

    Rosé frozen into cubes the night before, blitzed with strawberries. One blender serves six.

    • Rosé, frozen in ice-cube trays 750 ml
    • Frozen strawberries 250 g
    • Lemon juice 60 ml
    • Sugar syrup 60 ml

    Blend until thick, pour into coupes, add a strawberry on the rim.

    ZERO-PROOFFreeze pink lemonade instead of rosé. It blends exactly the same.

  • Coastal Cowgirl

    Ranch Water

    What Texans drink when it’s hot. Tequila, lime and a lot of bubbles.

    • Blanco tequila 45 ml
    • Lime juice 30 ml
    • Sparkling mineral water 120 ml

    Tall glass, lots of ice, tequila and lime in, top with mineral water, lime wedge on the side.

    ZERO-PROOFLime, a pinch of salt and mineral water over ice. Weirdly perfect on a hot day.

  • Diamonds and Denim

    The Saddle Sour

    A whisky sour with a proper foam. Tastes like a jukebox.

    • Bourbon 50 ml
    • Lemon juice 25 ml
    • Sugar syrup 15 ml
    • Aquafaba or egg white (optional) 15 ml

    Shake hard without ice, then again with ice. Strain over one big cube.

    ZERO-PROOFCold black tea instead of bourbon, same lemon, syrup and foam. Tastes grown up.

  • Space Cowgirl

    The Wild Wifey Marg

    A spicy margarita with a chilli-salt rim, for liftoff.

    • Blanco tequila 45 ml
    • Triple sec 20 ml
    • Lime juice 25 ml
    • Slices of jalapeño 2

    Shake everything hard with ice, strain over fresh ice, chilli salt on the rim.

    ZERO-PROOFLime, agave syrup, soda water and the jalapeño. The spice does the work.

  • On the side

    The chuckwagon board

    Salty, messy and eaten standing up: corn ribs with chilli butter, pulled-pork or jackfruit sliders, a big bowl of cowgirl caviar (black beans, corn, capsicum, red onion, lime and coriander) with corn chips, and a board of cheese, cured meats and honey.

    Then cookies iced like hats and boots, with her name on one of them.

    The Sheriff

    A badge, a banned word and a lot of fines

    Pin the badge on one guest at the start. All night, anyone who says “wedding”, “husband” or “fiancé” pays the sheriff a fine: a sip, a song request, or swapping hats with her. Catch the sheriff saying one of the words and the badge is yours.

    Teams of 3 to 53 hoops, a chair, his face on a stick15 minutes

    Stand the groom (his face on a stick, taped to a chair) at one end of the room. Three throws each from three big steps back. A ring over his head is three points, touching the chair is one. The bride throws from one step. Obviously.

    Hat Swap Dares

    The music stops, the hats move, the dares land
