The teapot tilts and out pours a cocktail. Across the table the cards are being shuffled, and somebody is about to hear something about herself that the whole group already knew. It's In The Cards is a hens afternoon for the girl who has always believed some things are meant to be, like this love story, and like a hens with teapots full of cocktails and a professional tarot reader dealing out everyone's future.
Our Fitzroy cocktail lounge looks like a 1920s Parisian bar fell head over heels for a hens party, with velvet chesterfields under hanging plants and gold and Gatsby glamour in every corner. Your reserved seating is ready for the whole group. The traditional tiered stands arrive stacked with sandwiches and cakes, biscuits and fruit, and everyone picks a colourful cocktail that turns up in its own teapot. It makes for a very fancy pour and a very silly photo.
Then the readings begin. Your tarot reader sets up at her own small table beside the group and works her way around, one guest at a time, from the maid of honour to the cousin who swears she doesn't believe in any of this and then asks the most follow-up questions. With a bigger crew, the readings become the running show of the afternoon, and every card turned gets a gasp or a very knowing look across the table.
And the bride? She goes last. By the time she sits down, the whole group has pulled their chairs in close, teapots in hand, waiting to hear what the cards have in store for her. VIP entry is sorted with the cover charge waived, and your VIP booth is yours for two hours. The surprise? A bottle of bubbly for your hen, poured for the whole group to raise a glass to whatever the cards promised her. Then the dance floor calls, and everyone dances the night away.
