The first paintball to hit the bride will get a mention in the wedding speeches, so make sure it comes from you. Shot Through The Heart is a hens day for a tight crew of seven, bride included, who love each other fiercely and would still happily ambush one another for sport. Paintball comes first and a waterfront dinner second, and once the evening kicks in there is a velvet booth with a surprise waiting for the bride. Love hurts, apparently. Today it also leaves a very satisfying splat.
It begins at the urban arena, with the gear laid out like the opening scene of a heist film. Camo overalls zip up and fog free full face masks click into place. Every girl is handed a tournament calibre paintball gun and four hundred paintballs of her own. Cue the trash talk. The bride swears she is untouchable, while the maid of honour says nothing and loads quietly. Then the girl who cried at the engagement party turns out to be a sharpshooter, and nobody is safe. It is sprint, hide, shriek, repeat, with a victory lap for every direct hit on the bride. Afterwards, get the photo of her pointing at the splat closest to her heart, because that one is going straight into the wedding slideshow.
Paint drying and hearts still racing, you step out to find your private chauffeur waiting to whisk the lot of you back to the city. It is a smooth, modern ride from point A to point B, which is just enough time to count the splats and argue about who fired first. For the record, it was the bride.
Now for the soft part of the day. Down on the waterfront, our Southbank cocktail bar has views over Melbourne and a lush flower wall, and there is a reserved table set for your crew. Bubbly is poured for everyone on arrival, and a bonus cocktail finds its way to the bride, a little something for the girl wearing the most paint. Then it is a main each from our Chef's Selection menu, the kind of plate that tastes twice as good after an afternoon in combat. Raise a glass to the woman who took the most hits for love.
And then the day turns into a night. We are heading for a hidden laneway lounge dripping in plush velvet and custom neon, where VIP entry is waiting with the cover charge waived and your VIP booth is yours for two hours. Glittering pendants catch the light as the moment she did not see coming arrives: a surprise bottle of bubbly for your hen, with every glass in the booth raised in her direction. Somebody cue the love songs.
Dance the night away with her. When she is spinning under the neon with her heart full of her people, she will spot you across the booth and mouth a thank you. You planned the ambush and you took the photo, and you will be telling this story at her fortieth. Straight through the heart, organiser.
